Dietary supplement formulas can contain more than individually declared vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and other dietary ingredients. Manufacturers may also use proprietary blends that group multiple dietary ingredients under a single blend name, and more complex formulations can contain blends within other blends.
Supplement Facts software should be able to maintain these relationships throughout formulation and panel generation rather than reducing every formula to a flat ingredient list. Panelgea® supports proprietary blends and nested proprietary blends so users can establish the hierarchy of a complex supplement formula and carry that structure through to the generated Supplement Facts panel.
What Is a Proprietary Blend?
A proprietary blend is a collection of two or more dietary ingredients grouped together and identified by a descriptive name. Under FDA requirements, the total weight of the proprietary blend is declared on the Supplement Facts panel, while the individual dietary ingredients contained within the blend generally do not require their individual quantitative amounts to be declared.
The ingredients within the blend still need to be listed in the appropriate order. FDA’s Dietary Supplement Labeling Guide explains the requirements for declaring proprietary blends and the dietary ingredients contained within them.
This makes proprietary blends different from a standard list of individually declared dietary ingredients. The formulation needs to maintain both the total amount of the blend and the identity and appropriate ordering of the ingredients contained within it.
Why Are Proprietary Blends More Complicated to Manage?
A simple supplement formula may contain dietary ingredients that can each be entered directly into the formulation. A proprietary blend introduces another level of organization because the software needs to understand that several ingredients belong to a larger parent blend.
The relationship between the blend and its components becomes important when the Supplement Facts panel is generated. The blend name, total blend weight, individual ingredients, ordering, indentation, and applicable Daily Value information all need to be presented appropriately without losing the underlying formula structure.
Managing these relationships manually can become increasingly difficult as formulas change. If an ingredient is added to a blend, removed from a blend, or its amount is adjusted, both the formulation and resulting panel may need to be reviewed.
How Does Panelgea® Handle Proprietary Blends?
Panelgea® allows proprietary blends to be created and maintained as structured records rather than simply entering a blend name as plain text. The ingredients that make up the blend can be associated with the proprietary blend so the relationship between the parent blend and its components is maintained.
Once established, the proprietary blend can be incorporated into a supplement formula at the appropriate amount. Panelgea® can then use that structure when generating the Supplement Facts panel, allowing the blend and its constituent ingredients to be presented according to the established hierarchy.
This also makes proprietary blends reusable. When the same established blend is used across multiple products, users can work from the existing blend record rather than rebuilding the blend structure independently for every Supplement Facts panel.
What Is a Nested Proprietary Blend?
A nested proprietary blend adds another level to the formulation hierarchy. Instead of containing only individual dietary ingredients, a proprietary blend may contain another blend as one of its components.
For example, a finished supplement could contain a broader performance blend that includes several dietary ingredients as well as a separately established botanical blend. The software then needs to understand that the botanical blend belongs within the larger proprietary blend while still maintaining the ingredients associated with that nested blend.
This creates a parent-and-child relationship that cannot be accurately represented by a simple flat ingredient list. The hierarchy needs to remain intact so the formulation and resulting Supplement Facts presentation reflect how the ingredients and blends are actually organized.
How Does Panelgea® Support Nested Proprietary Blends?
Panelgea® supports nested proprietary blends so users can build multi-level blend structures within a supplement formula. Instead of flattening the formulation, Panelgea® maintains the relationship between the primary proprietary blend, any nested blend, and the dietary ingredients associated with each level.
That structure can then be carried into Supplement Facts panel generation. Appropriate indentation and hierarchy help communicate which ingredients belong to the primary blend and which belong within a nested blend.
For manufacturers developing complex formulas, this also provides a more structured way to manage the formulation itself. The underlying product record reflects the actual organization of the formula rather than requiring users to recreate that relationship manually when the Supplement Facts panel is generated.
How Are Ingredients Within a Proprietary Blend Ordered?
The order of ingredients within a proprietary blend is not arbitrary. Under FDA requirements, dietary ingredients contained within a proprietary blend are generally listed in descending order by weight.
This means the software needs access to more than the blend name and total weight. The underlying formulation must maintain enough information about the individual ingredients to establish their relationship and appropriate order within the blend.
Panelgea® maintains the ingredient structure behind proprietary blends so the blend can be represented appropriately during panel generation. If the formulation changes, the underlying blend information should be updated and the Supplement Facts panel regenerated rather than manually rearranging ingredients within exported artwork.
What Happens to the Daily Value for a Proprietary Blend?
A proprietary blend does not receive a % Daily Value simply because the blend has a declared quantitative amount. When a Daily Value has not been established for the proprietary blend or applicable dietary ingredient, the Supplement Facts panel must use the appropriate symbol and corresponding statement indicating that a Daily Value has not been established.
The treatment of individual ingredients within a proprietary blend can also depend on whether an established Daily Value applies and how the ingredient is required to be declared. FDA’s Supplement Facts labeling guidance provides requirements for the placement and declaration of dietary ingredients, proprietary blends, quantitative amounts, and % Daily Value information.
Panelgea® incorporates Daily Value information into its Supplement Facts workflow so the panel can distinguish between nutrients and dietary ingredients with established Daily Values and those for which a Daily Value has not been established.
How Are Botanical Ingredients Managed Within a Blend?
Botanical ingredients introduce additional identification requirements whether they are declared individually or included within a proprietary blend. The botanical identity, plant part, and other applicable descriptive information need to be established correctly within the ingredient record before the ingredient is incorporated into the formula.
Panelgea® includes access to approximately 3,000 botanical records through Industry Herbs, helping users establish standardized botanical information when creating ingredients. Botanical records can then be used within formulas and proprietary blend structures while maintaining the ingredient information associated with the botanical.
Extracts may require additional information depending on the material and how it is being declared. Maintaining that information at the ingredient level helps prevent the botanical identity from being reduced to an informal ingredient name when it is subsequently used inside a proprietary blend.
What About Microorganisms and Other Dietary Ingredients?
Complex supplement formulas are not limited to botanicals. Probiotics and other microorganism-based ingredients can introduce their own nomenclature and declaration considerations, while other dietary ingredients may not have an established Daily Value.
Panelgea® supports microorganism information within the ingredient workflow so these materials can be incorporated into supplement formulations alongside vitamins, minerals, botanicals, fatty acids, and other dietary ingredients. When those ingredients are incorporated into proprietary blends, maintaining structured ingredient records helps preserve the information needed for the resulting panel.
This becomes increasingly valuable as formulas grow more complex. Instead of maintaining the ingredient identity in one system, the proprietary blend composition in another, and the final Supplement Facts presentation separately, the information can remain connected within the Panelgea® workflow.
Why Does Formula Hierarchy Matter?
Formula hierarchy provides context that a flat ingredient list cannot. If a formula contains a proprietary blend and that blend contains another blend, simply storing every component as an independent ingredient removes the relationships between those materials.
Those relationships matter when reviewing the formula and generating the Supplement Facts panel. The system needs to understand which ingredients belong directly to the finished product, which belong to a proprietary blend, and which may belong within a nested blend.
Panelgea® maintains these relationships within the formulation so the generated panel can reflect the established structure. This also makes it easier to return to the product later and understand how the formula was constructed without reconstructing the hierarchy from an exported label.
Can Proprietary Blends Be Used With Ingredient-Level Allergen Information?
Allergen information and proprietary blend structure address different aspects of the product, but both can originate from the ingredients used in the formula. Panelgea® allows users to specify applicable allergen information within ingredient records so that information remains associated with the ingredient when it is used within a product.
Panelgea® does not independently determine allergens based solely on an ingredient name. Users are responsible for establishing applicable allergen information from appropriate ingredient composition, supplier documentation, specifications, and other relevant information.
This is particularly important for blends because a parent blend name may not communicate everything contained within it. Maintaining information at the individual ingredient level provides a more complete product record than relying solely on the name of the proprietary blend.
What Happens When a Proprietary Blend Changes?
Proprietary blend formulations can change during product development. The amount of an ingredient may be adjusted, a botanical may be replaced, an ingredient may be removed, or an entirely new component may be introduced into the blend.
When the underlying formulation changes, the proprietary blend record and applicable product information should be updated before the Supplement Facts panel is regenerated. This allows Panelgea® to use the current blend hierarchy and ingredient information when producing the revised panel.
Updating the source information is preferable to manually changing the exported Supplement Facts artwork. Manual artwork changes can create a disconnect between the formula maintained by the organization and the declaration presented on the finished label.
Why Are Nested Blends Difficult to Manage Manually?
The complexity of a formula increases quickly as additional hierarchy is introduced. A single proprietary blend may be manageable in a spreadsheet, but nested blends require the user to keep track of parent blends, child blends, individual ingredients, quantities, ordering, indentation, and applicable declarations.
Changes can also affect more than one level of the structure. Adjusting an ingredient inside a nested blend may affect that blend, its parent proprietary blend, and ultimately the finished product formula.
A structured formulation system reduces the need to manually recreate these relationships during panel generation. Panelgea® keeps the formula hierarchy connected to the Supplement Facts workflow so changes can be made to the underlying information before the panel is regenerated.
What Should Supplement Facts Software Support for Proprietary Blends?
Supplement Facts software intended for complex formulas should support more than entering a proprietary blend name and total weight. It should maintain the ingredients contained within the blend, preserve their appropriate ordering, support multiple levels of formulation hierarchy, and generate a panel that reflects those relationships.
The system should also be capable of working with the ingredient types commonly found inside complex blends, including botanicals, extracts, microorganisms, fatty acids, and other dietary ingredients. Daily Value treatment, ingredient identity, allergen information, serving information, and applicable panel formatting also remain relevant even when ingredients are organized within blends.
Panelgea® brings these functions into the same workflow used to create and manage the finished supplement product. The proprietary blend therefore remains part of the underlying formulation rather than becoming a piece of text created only for the final label.
Generate Supplement Facts Panels for Complex Blends With Panelgea®
Panelgea® supports proprietary blends and nested proprietary blends as part of a structured dietary supplement formulation workflow. Users can establish the blend hierarchy, maintain the dietary ingredients associated with each level, incorporate botanical and microorganism information, manage ingredient-level allergen information, and generate a Supplement Facts panel from the resulting product record.
Completed Supplement Facts panels can be exported from Panelgea® as JPG, PNG, PDF, or SVG files for regulatory review and packaging artwork. When a formula or blend changes, users can update the applicable product information and regenerate the panel rather than manually rebuilding the Supplement Facts presentation.
Panelgea® is designed to assist with the creation of compliant facts-panel displays, but the accuracy of the resulting panel depends on accurate and complete product, ingredient, formulation, serving, nutritional, and other applicable information supplied by the user.
